Royal visit for sexual health clinic in London raises awareness of condition
Prince Harry has played his part in raising awareness for HIV in the UK this week by undergoing an STD test in front of the cameras. Arriving at the sexual health clinic in London, the royal underwent the very simple test and waited for the result to be confirmed as negative.
With over 100,000 people in the UK living with HIV, it’s now more important than ever to get tested. Around 1.9 people per 1000 population is HIV positive, but that incidence level is even higher amongst gay men with 48.7 per 1000 having the disease.
There are a range of causes for contracting HIV, but by far the most common is having unprotected sex. Your Sexual Health hope the Prince’s recent test highlights both the importance of getting tested and how easy it is to do so.
“Prince Harry’s recent test will hopefully encourage more people to undergo a HIV test,” said Dr. Rashid Bani, lead consultant for Your Sexual Health. “If you’ve had unprotected sex then you’re at risk and there’s often no clear signs that you have HIV until you take a test.”
