Sexual Health FAQs

Everyone has their own reasons for getting tested, here are just some of the reasons that might encourage you to get tested:

  • If you’re experiencing STD symptoms (take a look at our recent article for more information on the common signs of an STD)
  • Starting a new relationship and you want to ensure you’re all clear
  • If you’ve had a one night stand but didn’t use a condom
  • General peace of mind testing if you’ve had more than one sexual partner in the previous year
  • Before beginning IVF or if you’re trying for a baby
  • To support your VISA application if you’re moving to a country that requires HIV free certification

The frequency that you should take an STD test depends on a number of factors. Things that you need to consider include how often you have sex, whether you’re in a long term relationship or whether you’ve engaged in any high risk encounters. As a general rule of thumb, we always encourage everyone to undergo a general ‘sexual health MOT’ every year or every six months, testing for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis and HIV. If you’re single and you’ve had multiple sexual partners, we would recommend more regular testing.

Common signs of an STD may differ from men to women, and from person to person. These include:

  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Pain while urinating
  • Sores or spots around the genitals
  • Pain during sex
  • Lower abdominal pain

Remember, some STDs may not show symptoms, so you should still get tested.

If you can’t get to one of our sexual health clinics in Cambridge, you should order one of our home testing kits. The sample collection kits will be delivered to your home address within a few days, and you can then collect your samples before posting your sample back to us. Once your sample has been tested, we’ll notify you of your results immediately.

Once your sample has been deposited at one of our private STD clinics in Cambridge, it will be sent to our laboratory for testing. We use one of the most prestigious labs in the UK, delivering results to the highest standard of medical accuracy. When we learn your results they will be communicated using your preferred contact method before being uploaded to our secure portal.

In the event that your results return positive, you’ll also be offered a free telephone consultation with a GP from our partner medical organisation. They will answer any questions you may have about the condition and prescribe you medication should it be required. We’re the only testing service in the UK to offer this level of aftercare.

The service offered by Your Sexual Health offers a more discreet and confidential testing option to NHS testing. Here are just some of the reasons to choose us:

  • Discreet and confidential service where the only people who know about your test are you and us
  • Clinics across Cambridge and surrounding towns which means you’ll be able to find the most suitable option for you
  • Appointment service allowing you to fit your tests around your schedule
