What Does a Full STI Check Involve?

To check whether you’ve got any of the 11 STIs the test checks for, you’ll need to provide both a blood and urine sample. Here’s a summary of what’s involved in a full STI check depending on which option you go for.

Testing at Home

If you choose a full STI home test kit, we’ll send it to your door. Detailed instructions will be provided with the kit, but here’s a summary of what to expect from the process:

1. Order Your Test

Once we’ve received your order details, we’ll send the kit to your chosen address by first class post.

Full STI Check FAQs

Yes, a complete STI test can test for most sexually-transmitted diseases. Our premium profile test checks for 11 STDs at once: Chlamydia, HIV, Syphilis, Gardnerella Vaginalis, Gonorrhoea, Hepatitis B & C, Mycoplasma, Trichomonas Vaginalis, Ureaplasma and Herpes Simplex I/II (Current Infection).

How often you get tested for STIs would depend on the frequency of which you have sex with new partners. If you regularly have sex with new people, then it’s recommended you get a full STI test before intercourse with a new person.

If you’re monogamous (have sex with just one partner) and they are as well, then it’s recommended you both get tested at the start of the relationship. If you both test negative, then there is no need to get tested regularly afterwards.

Although a full STD screening can be slightly uncomfortable, it is not painful. Whether you need to give blood or take a swab, the discomfort lasts for only a few seconds. If you are worried about the discomfort, let the nurse/doctor know and they will talk you through the process and aim to put you at ease.

No, smear tests do not check for sexually-transmitted diseases. Instead, a smear test checks the health of your cervix and looks for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) cells that might become cervical cancer if left untreated.

The results of a private STD test have a much faster turnaround time compared with the NHS. The time depends on the test, but once our lab receives the sample, your results will be available within 4 working days. Read more about test turnaround times in our recent blog.
