HEPATITIS TESTING FAQS

How is Hepatitis Tested?

To diagnose hepatitis B and C, a blood sample is tested to check for the presence of the infection. For hepatitis B the initial screen is for the surface antigen, for hepatitis C it is for antibodies. Additionally, there’s a hepatitis test that can check whether you’re immune to Hepatitis B. It can give you further insight into whether you have had it before or the level of immunity you currently have after you’ve been vaccinated.

Do Tests Check for Both Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C?

There are tests on the market that check for both hepatitis B and hepatitis C at once. You can also opt for a test that checks for only hepatitis B or hepatitis C if someone you have had sex with was diagnosed with only one of the infections.

How Soon Does Hepatitis Show Up in a Blood Test?

It can take up to 28 days for standard tests to detect the infection in your blood, so it’s recommended you wait for at least that amount of time before getting tested to avoid a false-negative result.

However, with more advanced tests such as early detection tests, hepatitis B and C can be detected as early as 10 days after exposure. .

Is Hepatitis Easy to Detect Only By Its Symptoms?

It’s impossible to diagnose hepatitis only by its symptoms. This is particularly the case with hepatitis C as its symptoms don’t show until the liver has been damaged drastically. You can read more about the symptoms of both infections on our dedicated hepatitis B and hepatitis C pages, but if you have even the slightest suspicion that you are infected, it’s recommended you book a test now.
