WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT WHEN VISITING A SEXUAL HEALTH CLINIC IN EDINBURGH?

Many people are carriers of an STI but may never display symptoms as they are asymptomatic. We recommend that if you are in a long-term relationship with one sexual partner to have a sexual MOT every six months, just to be on the safe side. Or if you are having regular sexual contact with new people you should be tested before each new partner to make sure you are not spreading an unknown STD.

In short, yes you can. We, unfortunately, cannot take vaginal swabs when you are menstruating but we can collect swabs from other areas including drawing blood from your arm or collecting a urine sample. We discussed all about testing when you are on your period in our recent blog.
We recommend getting tested for STDs every six months if you have one continuous sexual partner or before every new sexual partner if not for good practice. However, you may also benefit from an STD test if:
- Someone that you’ve slept with has notified you that they have tested positive for an STD
- You’ve had a one-night stand with someone; you should especially think about testing if you’ve had unprotected sex
- You’ve just started a new relationship
- You’ve noticed symptoms that you think could be connected to an STI such as irregular discharge or genital warts.
- You’re trying for a baby and want to make sure you are clear of any STIs that could affect your pregnancy
STD stands for a sexually transmitted disease but can also be known as STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections). These are caused by bacteria, viruses or infections which are passed from one person to another typically during vaginal, oral, and anal sex.
