Who is the herpes test kit for?

This test is for you if you believe you may have recently come into contact with the Herpes Simplex Virus and have symptoms of herpes, including blisters or lesions affecting the face or genitals. Due to the nature of the test, it wouldn’t be accurate if you have been infected a long time ago, so make sure you opt for this herpes test kit only if you have recently been exposed and have symptoms.

Note: if you wish to test for a previous infection with herpes and you don’t have any symptoms, then a better suit for you would be this Herpes Simplex (IgG) test, which is accurate from 28 days following potential exposure.

When can I take this test?

If you have symptoms then this home test will offer accurate results straight away. This means that you don’t need to wait for weeks; just take the test as soon as you start noticing symptoms and you will get the results within days.

What is the turnaround time for this herpes blood test?

This test has a two-day turnaround time after reaching the laboratory. As soon as we have got your results, we will notify you using our online portal. Positive tests can be actioned by your own GP.  We can also recommend an independent private GP service should you require it.

Clinic test procedure

By selecting a clinic test you’ll be assisted by a nurse or doctor in one of our sexual health clinics located across the country.

1. Book your test

To book this test, simply press the ‘Select This Test’ button above. You’ll then be taken to our booking page where you can choose the best clinic for your needs.

2. Arrive at the clinic

Our clinics are all based in a discreet setting and because many of them are general health clinics, there’s no reason why anyone will know that you’re there for a sexual health screening. Just let the receptionist know who you are upon arrival.

3. Your blood sample

The Herpes Simplex I/II (IgM) test requires a blood sample only. The blood sample is collected by a trained nurse or doctor. They’ll take care of you and ensure you’re comfortable, but it will require the use of a needle.

4. Now we’ll take care of your results

Once you’ve deposited your sample, we’ll take care of the rest. We’ll notify you of your results using our online portal as soon as they’re reported by the laboratory.

Home test procedure

When choosing an at-home test kit, we’ll post a sample kit to your door for you to collect the sample in your own home, before returning it in a prepaid envelope. Detailed instructions will be provided with the kit, but here’s how the process works.

1. Book your test

To book this test, simply press the ‘Select This Test’ button above. You’ll then be taken to our booking page where you will need to select the Postal Test option.

2. We’ll post the kit

As soon as we receive your order the kit will be dispatched with all of the paperwork you’ll require. Our kits are sent by first class post unless you choose the Click & Collect option.

3. Your blood sample

Your blood sample will be collected using a finger prick sample collection kit. Full instructions will be provided with the kit and it’s important you follow them closely.

4. Now we’ll take care of your results

We provide you with a return postage envelope that can be sent directly to our laboratory. Simply put the package in the post box and as soon as it’s received by the lab we will begin testing.

Herpes FAQs

What does a genital herpes test involve?

A genital herpes test checks for whether you are infected with a Herpes Simplex Virus type I and Herpes Simplex Virus type II. You can get tested for Herpes by using a blood, urine or swab sample. Opt for an HSV-1 and 2 home test kit or choose a test that checks for only one of them.

How accurate are herpes home test kits?

Herpes home tests are a reliable way of getting results. The important thing to remember is to take an IgM test if you’ve recently been infected and/or have active symptoms and take an IgG test 28 or more days after exposure and/or if you don’t have any symptoms. As long as you choose the right test, then you can trust the accuracy of the results.

What types of herpes tests are there?

There are 2 main types of herpes tests depending on whether they check for current or past infection: IgM herpes tests check for current infection while IgG – for past infection. You can also find different herpes tests depending on the sample collection method: urine and swab tests or herpes blood tests.

Finally, there are tests that check for Herpes Simplex I only, Herpes Simplex II only or tests that check for both.

Can I get tested for herpes without symptoms?

Yes, you can test for herpes even if you don’t have symptoms. Simply make sure you wait for at least 28 days after exposure and use a Herpes IgG test, which is most accurate if you don’t have symptoms.

Can I get tested for herpes while pregnant?

You can get tested for herpes if you are expecting a baby. If you’re having herpes-like symptoms, then it’s especially important to get tested.
