No, some STDs don’t show symptoms and can go undetected, which can cause issues later on. Some STDs with no symptoms are Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea. Find out more about what STDs don’t show symptoms in our recent blog.

It’s best to wait after the incubation period to pass before you visit a Sexual Health clinic to be tested and treated. The HIV incubation period is 2 to 4 weeks after infection, syphilis has an incubation period of up to three weeks, and chlamydia has a 7 to 21-day incubation period.  You can read more about this in our dedicated blog.

Most STDs aren’t detectable straight away. You should wait at least 14 days before testing for chlamydia or gonorrhoea. You should wait at least 28 days before testing for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.  To learn more about testing times for specific STDs, read our dedicated blog.

For some people, the symptoms of chlamydia can appear in the first or second week of infection. Others can take months to show symptoms, whilst some never exhibit symptoms at all.

If you believe that you have chlamydia or you have come into sexual contact with someone who has, you should seek sexual health screening immediately.

Failure to properly diagnose chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and lead to issues with fertility.
