GONORRHOEA TESTING FAQS

How is Gonorrhoea Tested?

Gonorrhoea can be detected through a urine sample or a swab sample. For men, this involves a urethral swab and for women, this requires a high vaginal swab. Which sample you need to provide would depend on which test you opt for.

How Long Does it Take for Gonorrhoea to Show Up in a Test?

Gonorrhoea can show up in a test between one to two weeks of exposure, so it is recommended you wait for at least 7-14 days before getting tested. This will ensure you avoid receiving a false negative result. If you are curious to find out more about the incubation period of other STIs, have a look at our blog on How Long After Sex You Should Test for STDs.

Is There a Quick Test for Gonorrhoea?

Yes, there are gonorrhoea tests that offer incredibly fast results, including our Instant clinic test which returns results in less than an hour and our FAST test which can be taken at home and returns results within 1 day of the test reaching our laboratory.

Can I Get Tested for Gonorrhoea if I Don’t Have Symptoms?

Yes, absolutely. If you suspect that you might have caught gonorrhoea, get tested even if you don’t have symptoms. This is especially important because as stated in our blog about STIs with No Symptoms, 5 in 10 women and 1 in 10 men with gonorrhoea won’t show any symptoms.
